Beauregard’s Bounty

Thanks to a beautiful German Shepherd named Beauregard a lot of needy animals are going to be taken care of. It’s really accredited to his generous owner Kenneth Munzert who left a sizable estate, the proceeds of the sale of his home on Federal Hill, to  the SPCA of Richmond, Virginia.
The house had been owned by Kenneth Munzert, a retired engineer who died last year at age 88 and had no close surviving family members. He left his principal asset, his 405 Warren Ave. home overlooking the harbor, to the Richmond, Va., animal charity that had pledged to protect his German shepherd, a former stray named Beauregard. While the dog died before his master, Munzert directed that the bulk of his estate be left to the SPCA of Richmond, whose officials had earlier pledged to protect the dog should its owner die first.
Yesterday the house was auctioned off and sold for a winning bid of $808,500.  Prior to the sale of his Federal Hill house Munzert  left about $750,000 to other animal protection groups in the US and elsewhere.

Pit Bulls Go Through Training

dieselcelebratesgraduation.jpg What a marvelous program! I’d love to see this in other cities across the world! Thanks to the Chicago Tribune for this article.
Program turns notorious dogs into good citizens Pit bull owners steered away from dogfighting By Gerry Smith | Tribune reporter 10:22 PM CDT, March 22, 2008 On the streets of Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, Sean Moore and his 8-month-old pit bull, Jigga, are setting an example. “The pit bulls you normally see, they’re pulling, they’re not listening, they’re wild, they’re barking at people,” said Moore, 38. “When [other owners] see us with the same dogs, they ask, ‘How do y’all do that? And how much does it cost?’”

Virginia Passes Bills on Fighting, Puppy Mills

Virginia House Passes Animal Fighting, Puppy Mill Bills
posted 2:09 pm Tue February 12, 2008

It was a good day for dogs at the General Assembly.

Without debate, the House of Delegates passed bills on Tuesday cracking down on dogfighting and so-called puppy mills.

The dogfighting bill makes it easier for authorities to investigate people who engage in the blood sport. The measure was prompted, at least in part, by the Michael Vick dogfighting case. The suspended Atlanta Falcons star is serving 23 months for a federal dogfighting conspiracy.

The bill applies to all forms of animal fighting and makes cockfighting a felony for the first time in Virginia. The vote was 93-2.
